Listening Therapy: RRP

Rest and Restore Protocol (RRP)

The Rest and Restore Protocol (RRP) is a new listening therapy recently released by Unyte.  While the SSP targets increased access to regulation through the Ventral Vagal (social engagement) system, the RRP aims to increase access to rest and restoration via the low tone dorsal aspect of the parasympathetic system; in other words, the RRP aims to support the nervous system to shift into a state of rest that is hard to access when we spend a lot of time in survival mode.  The RRP is new and still undergoing research, and potential risks and benefits can be discussed on an individual basis.

The RRP is intended to be listened to before bed at a time of rest.  You can use earbuds or speakers for RRP, whereas SSP requires over the ear headphones.  Some people may choose to access both SSP and RRP, often starting with one and adding in the other.

Potential Benefits of RRP

While the RRP is still in its early stages, reported benefits include:

  • Improved sleep/reduction in insomnia symptoms
  • Reduced anxiety
  • Reduced trauma symptoms
  • Reduced depressive symptoms

Potential Contraindications and Considerations:

Some individuals have experienced faintness during listening, so if you have a history of low blood pressure or fainting, it may be best to listen in a comfortable chair instead of lying down.  Some people have experienced increased digestive activity with RRP, and there is the potential to flare up chronic symptoms when the protocol is not appropriately titrated (ex: too much, too fast).  As with SSP, RRP has the potential to increase tinnitus. Working with your provider can help determine the best listening plan for you to meet your nervous system’s needs.

Access and Pricing for SSP and/or RRP

The duration of listening differs for each person. Most people start with short listens of one to five  minutes, however some individuals with very sensitive nervous systems may require a more titrated approach of less than one minute of listening, and some people are able to progress to longer listens.  Generally, the SSP seems to be more effective with shorter listens, so progression beyond 15 minutes of listening at a time is less common.

If you are an existing client at Enduring Heart Somatic Therapy, you can choose to add on a 6 month subscription to SSP and/or RRP and your listening will be supporting during the course of your regular therapy sessions.

New clients interested in SSP can either choose to sign up for an SSP or RRP package, which will support your listening and incorporate other aspects of nervous system support, or you may choose to attend sessions with another focus (such as Somatic Experiencing Sensory supports, or other OT based supports) and add on an SSP or RRP subscription to your sessions.
